In April 2019, Porto City Hall launched a public competition open to all residents, both local and foreign, amateurs and professionals, calling for original photographs that portrayed the city from different or contemporary perspectives. The competition awarded the three best contributions, chosen by a specialised jury. The turnout exceeded expectations, both in terms of quantity and quality, and in addition to publishing a small-format book with all the contributions, the jury selected a shortlist to be published in a special edition.
With 400 of the best pictures, we designed a larger format book encased in a carefully crafted wooden frame allowing it to be displayed vertically. Over 20 different covers create diversity and the possibility for a range of presentation styles. All the images fill either a single page or double page spread, so the semantics and shades, their density and shapes can be appreciated. More than a photobook, the end result is a surprising photo object.
